What is a line?

Petra Kempf's publication - You are the City. Subtitled - "Observation, organization, and transformation of urban settings". The publication is 22 sheets of clear acetate onto which different conceptual layers and frameworks of a city are printed.
The project is extremely conceptual, promoting the user to start thinking about their city spatially, physically making fresh connections through layering.
It links back to the TOAST exhibition I looked at earlier, layering translucent sheets of perspex, bringing together abstract formations of type.

Give Up Art,
North/South/East/West,

Give Up Art are a dsign studio dedicated to producing "top notch graphic design", usually working with clients in the music, publishing, advertising and broadcasting sectors.
North/South/East/West was a collaborative project, a photographic and musical document focusing on the music of four different regions of the world — North and South UK and East and West coast USA. Photographer Shaun Bloodworth has captured some oustandingly crisp shots of the artists involved, (an area I'd really like to start channeling into my design work) alongside designer Stuart Hammersleys beautifuly simple use of colour and layout.

What is a line?
3D>2D - Adventures in and out of Architecture

More scans, this time from the publication '3D > 2D Adventures in and out of Architecture' by The Designers Republic. I found some very inspirational imagery, cutting up and montaging modern architecture to create abstract compositional structures. As a massive graffiti enthusiast, it reminds me of many 3D style painters such as the work of 'DAIM', 'TOASTONE', and 'PEETA" 3 artists I shall be exploring in response to 'What is a LINE?'

I particularly like the next three images as they almost jump out at the viewer, with a very strong sense of structure but in such an abstract manor. It's my aim to produce some similar style imagery using my own photos and drawings.

What is a line?
Point of view,

A few scans from what is probably my most prized book, Black Ink by Toast One (Ata Bozaci). The images are from the Point of View exhibition in Lahr, Germany (2005). Each one says 'TOAST' through use of abstract line and shape. I love how he has physically started to experiment with layering and opacity as these anamorphic letter forms start to come together from the right angle.

The book is printed solely in black and white, focusing on true style and composition. Like the previous pieces the name 'TOAST' is mixed up somewhere amongst such a hectic make up of lines and shapes.

A beautifully painted private apartment by Toast and Dare, another artist and designer that really inspires me. Working again with anamorphic elements, keeping the piece flowing from room to room, very crisp.

Visual language,
What is a line?

Experiments with laser cutting in cardboard, an area which I shouldn't dismiss, especially if I want to start creating precise structures in relation to modern architecture.

Design is a VIRUS,
Cardboard flyers,

After browsing context for 'what is a line' I came across these cardboard flyers promoting broadband. With the slogan "It's so good, there wasn't much left to make this any fancier." We're looking at producing cardboard flyers to promote 'DO DAY', they definitly come across more visually engaging and physically move away from the average glossy flyer.

Visual language,
What is a line?

In order to start discovering what a line is, I started looking at lines applied within architecture. So far only looking at secondary imagery from the web and books, I want to get out in Leeds and gather some interesting compositional shots of the local architecture. These images below are all rather interesting, but not necessarily because of the building itself, but in the way they have been captured...

"One size fits all"
- Wrapping paper

Ingenius wrapping paper idea. I love the user interaction, having to atempt the wordsearch in order to pick out the message you want to say. Adds a more personal touch to something that is usually overlooked and disposed of within minutes of its removal. It's more than likely the most examined wrapping paper on the market by far...

We Are What We Do,

We want people to try something new, even if it's a small self-less gesture or a greedy self indulgence, it's about people maing themselves feel a bit better. We wanted to look at creating a library of little things that make peoples days better, a website as the hub of a larger interactive platform for people to share and gather inspiration.

'We Are What We Do' are basically a collective that have beat us to it, using hundreds of positive 'actions' based in different categories. After signing up you can add actions to your 'to do' list or look back on past actions completed, all the time totting up the millions of actions done worldwide...

Motivational quotes.

A few more motivational quotes from some familliar names...

•The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. -Eleanor Roosevelt

•The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra. -Jimmy Johnson
•An eye for an eye only makes the world blind. -Gandhi

Happiness is a direction, not a destination. -Unknown

•We can't solve problems by using the same thinking we used to create them.

Although I doubt we shall be approaching our resolution in this way, I think it's good to look at the kind of language used that gets people thinking, motivating them to get up and be productive, wether that be with their current life or in trying something new.

Design is a VIRUS,
Initial ideas,

Whilst we were looking at inspirational material to aim at 9-5 workers, we wanted to encorporate an element of scare tactics into our campaign. Through this I discovered a government official .pdf covering almost all areas of work related issues regarding peoples health both physically and mentally. Although we didn't persue this idea, the .pdf could have been extremely useful in aiding us pin point where work related issues are most frequent, helping us target a relevant audience.
